= Field Notes on Structure

This document exists to exercise a real heading hierarchy and the two kinds of
list side by side, so a reader's contents outline has something to nest and the
list-fidelity gate has something to measure. The paragraph you are reading now
is deliberately long enough to wrap across several lines, because the gate reads
the body baseline pitch off a wrapped paragraph and then asks whether a tight
list sets its items at that same pitch. Everything below is ordinary prose,
headings and lists, with nothing set by hand.

== Bullets, Set Tight

A tight bullet list carries no blank line between its items, so it sets at the
body pitch, its markers seated on each item's own baseline:

- clay was heavy and awkward to carry;
- papyrus was brittle and cracked when folded;
- parchment was superb but ruinously dear;
- paper answered all three at once.

== Steps, Set in Order

A numbered list shares the same metrics, its enumerators aligned on the baseline
where a reader expects a number to sit:

+ ret the raw fibre until the cellulose loosens;
+ beat the sodden pulp until the individual fibres separate and swell, a stage that cannot be hurried and on which the strength of every later sheet depends;
+ lift a thin, even layer on a fine screen;
+ press and dry the couched sheet until it is flat.

=== A Nested Turn

A sub-list hangs under its parent item at a deeper indent, keeping the parent's
pitch and its own:

- the papermaker's core tools are two:
- the mould is a screen on a frame;
- the deckle is the rim that bounds the sheet;
- the practised shake felts the fibres.

== Loose, for Contrast

A list whose items are parted by blank lines sets loose, with a block's worth of
space between one item and the next:

- permanence is a property to be designed for, deliberately and at some cost, and never simply assumed;

- the cheap paper that democratised the written word proved far less durable than the dear materials it replaced;

- the task that remains is to keep what we have written from forgetting itself.
